The 5 Most Expensive Car Breakdowns and How to Prevent Them

Nowadays, the car has become an indispensable part of our lives. However, as much as we love driving, we must admit it is a constant source of expenses: taxes, MOT/ITV inspections, insurance, and garage visits.

At Ecumotorstock, we have compiled a list of the 5 most expensive breakdowns a vehicle can suffer, along with their causes, so you have the information needed to prevent them.

1. Air Conditioning Failure

A car can function perfectly without air conditioning. However, if you live in an area with high summer temperatures, driving without it can be a nightmare. If you notice a foul odor after turning it on or if the air doesn't reach all parts of the cabin, you are likely facing a costly AC fault.

What causes this failure? This is a frequent breakdown often caused by lack of use during winter. Simply turning the AC on regularly for a few minutes during the colder months can help you avoid this. The average cost of this repair is around €1,200.

2. Connecting Rod Bearings

The connecting rod (biela) transmits movement from the piston to the crankshaft. In other words, it transforms the linear motion of the pistons into the circular motion of the crankshaft. It is a critical component for power transmission and motion transformation, subjected to immense tension, compression, and bending forces.

While a single bearing shell only costs about €45 to €50, replacing it is one of the most expensive maintenance operations. This is because the entire engine must be disassembled, requiring at least 20 hours of labor. Therefore, a connecting rod bearing failure can cost approximately €1,400.

What causes this failure? The main causes are a lack of periodic engine lubrication and the poor condition of the bearings themselves.

3. Clutch

If your vehicle’s RPMs increase when changing gears but your speed does not, you are likely facing a clutch failure. This repair can cost you around €1,300.

What causes this failure? The most common cause is "riding the clutch"—keeping your foot resting on the pedal instead of using the footrest. Additionally, not depressing the pedal fully when shifting contributes significantly to premature wear.

4. Injector Failure

Generally, an injector fault is detected by a significant loss of engine power, limited top speed, and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption.

What causes this failure? Injectors naturally wear out over time, but this usually happens after a very high mileage. Premature failure is often linked to bad habits:

  • Using low-quality fuel.

  • Habitually driving on "reserve" (low fuel levels).

  • Failing to change the fuel filter according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

5. Turbocharger Failure

If you notice your car is consuming more oil than usual or white smoke is coming out of the exhaust, you are likely dealing with a turbocharger failure. The average price for this repair ranges between €2,500 and €3,000.

How can we avoid this? Proper vehicle use is the first step in preventing turbo risks, especially when starting or stopping the engine:

  • When starting: Wait at least one minute before driving off. This allows the oil to reach and lubricate all mechanical parts of the turbo, preventing harmful "dry friction."

  • When stopping: After a trip, wait another minute before turning off the engine. This significantly reduces carbon buildup, which is damaging to engine components.
