We work with the three types of electric power steering systems currently in use: electro-hydraulic
pumps, steering columns with an electric motor and electronically
assisted racks.

We carry out a precise diagnosis of the fault, replace or repair the damaged components using top-quality spare parts (equivalent to original equipment) and finally test each repaired unit to ensure a long service life and factory-like performance.

All these steps allow us to offer our customers a reliable, economical and guaranteed solution, avoiding the need to buy a much more expensive new steering unit.

Test bench and quality guarantee on every repair

Test bench and quality guarantee on every repair

One of the pillars of our service is the dedicated test bench for electric power steering that we have at Ecumotorstock.

This test bench allows us to test each power steering unit outside the vehicle, simulating real operating conditions.

We connect the repaired unit to our specialist diagnostic equipment, which reproduces the signals of the ECU and of the
torque and angle sensors, and applies loads to the steering's electric motor.

In this way we can verify in real time that the assistance works correctly in both directions, that the motor delivers the necessary force and that no error codes appear during operation.

Request information today

All repaired power steering units undergo these rigorous tests before delivery.

We only consider a repair complete when the unit has
successfully passed all the test bench trials, ensuring perfect operation.

Thanks to this thorough quality control, we can deliver
each rebuilt power steering unit with the peace of mind and guarantee that it will work correctly from the very first moment in the vehicle.

Our commitment is to offer a repaired electric power steering unit that provides the same reliability and performance as a new part.

Common faults in electric power steering (by make and model)

Alfa Romeo

Mito: Fault codes: C1005 (Angle sensor fault), C1002 (Torque sensor
fault). The steering loses assistance sporadically.

When it fails, switching the vehicle off and starting it again usually restores the assistance. At other times the steering wheel becomes heavier towards one side, and a purring sound from the electric motor may be heard.

Audi

A3: The steering loses assistance intermittently, accompanied by a torque sensor fault.

In other cases, the assistance disappears permanently, indicating an ECU fault, or even no communication with the steering unit.

Citroën

C1: Fault codes: C1554 / 5554 (Power supply relay fault). The power
steering normally does not come into operation. Sometimes, when the ignition is switched off and on again, it assists again for a while, but eventually fails again.

C3: Fault codes: C1404 (ECU fault), C1415 (Motor fault). The steering
produces a buzzing or purring noise in the rack area without the steering wheel being turned. Occasionally the assistance is lost but starts working again by itself without needing to restart the ignition. At other times, the vehicle has to be switched off and on for the steering to assist again. Finally, the
steering may be left permanently without assistance.

C3 2010: Fault codes: P0606 (Internal error), C1415 (Motor fault). The
steering is left permanently without assistance (the electric assistance stops working completely).

C3 Picasso: Fault codes: P0606 (Internal error), C1415 (Motor fault). The
steering loses assistance permanently, without working at
all.

C4 HPI: The electro-hydraulic pump only works at times; it may or may not log
fault codes. It also tends to lose hydraulic fluid (oil) through the 2-wire
connector, and when this leak occurs the assistance fails intermittently.

C4 TRW: The pump stops providing assistance sporadically, and sometimes
even loses assistance permanently.

C8: The steering system works sporadically; when it stops working,
there is no communication with the steering unit. The message “Power steering fault” appears on the cluster and the assistance does not work. A “Remote
coding fault” may also appear in the steering diagnosis.

Jumpy: The power steering works intermittently; when it fails, there is no
communication with the steering unit. A power steering fault appears and there is no
assistance, and a remote coding fault may likewise be shown in the steering
module.

Saxo: The power steering simply does not work or works noisily (the
pump makes an abnormal noise when trying to assist).

Dacia

Duster: The steering pump fails sporadically, leaving the vehicle without
assistance at times.

Fiat

500: Frequent faults of the torque sensor and the steering angle
sensor. The steering loses assistance sporadically; when this happens, if
the vehicle is stopped and started again, the steering begins to
assist again. At other times the steering wheel becomes heavier
to one side, accompanied by a whine from the steering motor.

Bravo: Fault codes: C1007 (Power steering motor), C1013
(Power steering). The steering is left without assistance
and the fault codes can be cleared, but
they reappear shortly afterwards, indicating a persistent fault.

Croma: The steering unit does not establish communication with the diagnostic system. The
car may even fail to start because the steering ECU is offline,
and on the occasions when it does work, it only does so intermittently.

Grande Punto / Punto Evo: Fault codes: C1005 (Angle sensor fault), C1002 (Torque sensor
fault). The steering loses assistance sporadically. When it fails, switching
the engine off and starting it again usually brings the assistance
back. At other times the steering wheel stiffens towards one
side, accompanied by a whine from the electric steering motor.

Punto 188: Fault codes: C1005 (Angle sensor fault), C1002 (Torque
sensor fault), C1007 (Power steering motor fault). The steering
loses assistance intermittently. When this happens, simply stopping the
vehicle and starting it again restores the assistance temporarily.

Scudo: The power steering works sporadically; when it stops working,
there is no communication with the steering unit. It shows
a power steering fault and is left without assistance. It
may also indicate a remote coding defect in the system.

Stilo: Fault codes: C1007 (Power steering motor), C1013 (Power steering). The steering
is left without assistance, and even if the error codes are
cleared, they are logged again after a few movements, revealing the fault.

Ulysse: The power steering system works intermittently; when it fails,
there is no communication with the unit. A power steering
fault appears (power steering inoperative) along with a remote coding
fault, leaving the vehicle without electric assistance in the steering.

Ford

C-Max: The power steering does not work or communicate with
the diagnostic equipment, or a power steering error appears directly on
the dashboard. Occasionally it works again sporadically without any intervention.

Fiesta: The steering loses assistance randomly; sometimes the module does
not respond to diagnostics (no communication) and when it
does communicate it reports a power steering fault. At
other times the steering works intermittently and records no faults.

Fiesta 2009: The power steering does not work at all and
diagnostics show an ECU fault and a steering motor fault.

Focus: The steering gives no assistance and does not communicate
with diagnostics either, or it shows a power steering error. In
some cases it works again sporadically after a few attempts.

Fusion: The steering loses assistance randomly; the steering unit
may not communicate with the scanner, and if it
does communicate, it records a power steering fault. At
other times the steering works sporadically without showing errors.

Galaxy: The electro-hydraulic steering pump does not activate (does
not work). In other cases it works but does
not provide enough assistance, making the steering feel heavy.

S-Max: Similar to the Galaxy: the steering pump
does not start working, or it works
but with insufficient assistance, stiffening the steering wheel.

Hyundai

Accent: The steering becomes heavier to one side. It can end up
with no assistance at all, with diagnostics showing a torque sensor fault (difference
between the signals of the main torque sensor and the auxiliary sensor).

i30: A steering motor fault and a steering ECU fault
appear in diagnostics. The steering becomes heavy. If the error codes
are cleared, the power steering works again for a while.

Lancia

Musa: Fault codes: C1007 (Power steering motor), C1013 (Power steering). The steering is
left without assistance. Even if the error codes are cleared, they come back
after a short time in use, indicating that the power steering fault persists.

Ypsilon: Torque sensor fault and steering angle sensor fault. The
assistance is lost sporadically. When it stops working, if the vehicle
is switched off and on again, the steering usually recovers
the assistance. At other times the steering wheel is heavier to
one side, accompanied by a whine from the electric motor.

Mazda

2: The power steering does not work and diagnostics show
an ECU fault and a steering unit motor fault.

3: The steering is left permanently
without assistance, or sometimes loses it sporadically.

Mercedes

A-Class (W168): The electric steering pump does not work. If the
wheel is forced to the steering stops, the assistance
cuts out (the pump cuts the assistance under maximum demand).

A-Class (W169): No error codes are logged in the steering.
The steering wheel is heavier to one side than
the other. It may even happen that, when stationary,
the steering turns slightly by itself to one side.
Internal noises are also noticeable in the steering column.

B-Class (W245): No error codes logged. The steering stiffens more to
one side than the other, abnormally. In some cases,
the steering wheel turns slightly by itself in one
direction. Internal noises are also heard in the power steering.

Mini

Cooper: The assist pump stays on even when the ignition is switched
off (it does not shut off when it should). In other cases,
the pump simply does not work and the steering has no assistance.

Cooper R56: The power steering is permanently without assistance and diagnostics show
a steering ECU fault. The assistance is also noticeably unbalanced: the
steering wheel turns more lightly to one side than the other.

Mitsubishi

Colt: The steering loses assistance sporadically, sometimes accompanied by vibrations
in the steering wheel when it fails. In other cases, the
power steering stops working permanently until the unit is repaired.

Nissan

Micra: Fault codes: C1606 / 5606 (Steering motor fault), C1608 /
5608 (Steering ECU fault). When these two codes appear at the
same time, the power steering does not work at all; if
we clear the codes, it works again momentarily. With only the
motor fault (C1606/5606), the steering stops assisting sporadically, but switching the
ignition off and on again usually makes it work again temporarily.

Qashqai: The steering ECU fails, causing the power
steering to lose assistance completely (heavy steering).

Opel

Agila: The steering becomes heavier to one side than the other.
In addition, a steering motor fault appears that cannot be
cleared; while this error is present, the steering gives no assistance.

Astra G (TRW-1): The power steering does not work. At
times it works again but very noisily (abnormal groaning
or buzzing sounds can be heard when turning).

Corsa B: The steering feels heavier turning to one side than
the other (partial loss of assistance in one direction).

Corsa C: Motor fault in the steering unit, so the steering gives no assistance. Diagnostics
show the motor fault and do not allow it to be cleared until the fault
is repaired. In addition, the steering wheel is heavier to one side (uneven assistance).

Corsa D: Torque sensor and angle sensor fault. The steering loses assistance sporadically.
When it fails, if the car is switched off and started again, the
steering usually begins to assist again. At other times the steering wheel becomes
heavier to one side, accompanied by a whine from the assist motor.
Meriva: Fault codes: C1500 (Torque sensor voltage out of limits), C1502
(Difference between the main and auxiliary torque sensor), C1550 (Steering ECU
fault). The steering loses assistance intermittently. When it fails, stopping the vehicle
and starting it again usually makes it work again. If code
C1550 appears, the steering stops working until the unit is repaired.

Vectra C: The steering unit does not communicate with the vehicle electronics. When this happens,
the car does not detect the power steering (it does not start due to
this network fault) and there is no assistance. On the occasions when it works
again, the assist pump only operates randomly (it works “when it feels like it”).

Peugeot

107: Fault codes: C1554 / 5554 (Power supply relay fault). The steering usually
gives no assistance. Sometimes, switching the ignition off and on again restores the assistance
for a few moments, but shortly afterwards it fails again and becomes heavy.

206: The steering pump gives no assistance, or only does
so sporadically (it works at times and not at others).

207: Fault codes: P-0606 (ECU fault), C-1414 (Steering motor fault).
The steering is left without assistance and the error
code cannot be cleared until the internal fault is resolved.

307: The pump works on occasions, and may or may
not log fault codes. In addition, hydraulic oil leaks from the
two-wire connector, and when this happens the assistance fails intermittently.

407: Same as on the 307, the electro-hydraulic pump sometimes works
and sometimes does not, and may not log codes. It also
has oil leaks at the 2-wire connector, with intermittent assistance failures.

807: The power steering works at times; when it fails, the unit does not
communicate with diagnostics. A power steering fault appears on the dashboard and the
assistance does not act. A remote coding fault of the module is also indicated.

Expert: Similar to the 807: it works sporadically and
when it stops working there is no communication with
the steering unit. A power steering fault (power steering inoperative)
is shown, and a remote coding fault in diagnostics.

Renault

Clio III / Modus: Fault codes: DF002 / C1608 / 5608 (ECU fault),
DF035 / C1606 / 5606 (Steering motor fault). The power
steering does not work, and only the motor fault code can
be cleared; the ECU fault remains permanently active, preventing assistance.

Kangoo: The electro-hydraulic steering pump does not work, or works but very
noisily (indicating mechanical wear or wear of the pump's electric motor).

Kangoo (2nd gen): The pump stops providing assistance
sporadically, leaving the steering randomly heavy.

Laguna III: The steering pump stops giving assistance sporadically; at
times it assists and at others it does not.

Megane II: Fault codes: C1606 / DF035 (Steering motor fault), C1608 / DF002
(ECU fault). The steering remains permanently without assistance. At other times,
after clearing the faults, the steering works again for a while,
but shortly afterwards the codes reappear and the assistance stops acting again.

Megane III: Fault codes: C1608 / DF002 (ECU fault). The
steering gives no assistance (heavy steering at all times).
Scenic II: Fault codes: C1606 / DF035 (Steering motor fault), C1608
/ DF002 (ECU fault). The steering remains permanently without assistance.
Occasionally, after clearing the error codes, the assistance returns temporarily, but
shortly afterwards the faults reappear and the steering stiffens again.

Scenic III: Fault codes: C1608 / DF002 (ECU fault). The steering
does not work (it gives no electric assistance to turning whatsoever).

Saab

9-3: The steering unit does not communicate. The car fails to
start or shows a serious fault because there is no communication
with the power steering. When this happens, the assist pump
only works occasionally (sometimes it assists and sometimes not, very unpredictably).

Seat

Altea: Sometimes the power steering stops working and a steering torque
sensor fault appears in diagnostics. In other cases, the assistance does
not work permanently, indicating a steering ECU fault. The unit may
even fail to communicate with the diagnostic equipment when it fails.

Ibiza (Koyo): The assistance sometimes fails and, when it does, the unit does
not communicate with the scanner. In that situation, the steering gives no
assistance and a power steering fault appears when trying to diagnose it.

Ibiza (TRW): The steering pump indicates an angle sensor fault.
In addition, when it fails, the pump stops working
and does not communicate with diagnostics either. Occasionally the
pump works again sporadically (the assistance comes and goes).

León: Similar to the Altea: the steering sometimes gives no assistance and
shows a torque sensor fault; at other times it stops assisting completely and
permanently with a steering ECU error. It may also happen that the steering
unit does not communicate with the diagnostic system while it is failing.

Skoda

Fabia (Koyo): The assistance fails at times; when this happens, the steering
unit does not communicate with diagnostics. At those times the
steering gives no assistance and a power steering fault appears.

Fabia (TRW): The assist pump shows a steering angle sensor fault. Likewise,
when it fails, the pump does not work or communicate with
diagnostics. On occasions it works again sporadically before failing once more.

Octavia: On occasions the power steering stops working and logs a torque
sensor fault. At other times, the assistance does not work permanently,
indicating an ECU fault. It may also happen that the steering
unit fails to communicate with the diagnostic system when it is faulty.

Smart

Forfour: The steering loses assistance sporadically (sometimes accompanied by vibrations
in the steering wheel when it fails). Eventually, the steering may
be left permanently without assistance until the unit is repaired.

Suzuki

SX4: The power steering sometimes loses assistance and
causes vibrations or shaking, or the electric steering motor
makes a continuous noise (whine) even without turning.

Wagon (Swift/Wagon R+): The steering becomes heavier to one side than the
other. It also logs a steering motor fault in the
ECU that cannot be cleared, leaving the steering without assistance.

Toyota

Aygo: Fault codes: C1554 / 5554 (Power supply relay fault).
The power steering usually does not work at all. On occasions, when
the ignition is switched off and on, the assistance returns for a short
time, but it ends up failing again and the steering becomes heavy.

Volkswagen

Golf V: On occasions the power steering stops working and a
torque sensor fault appears in diagnostics. In other cases the
assistance disappears completely and permanently and a steering ECU fault is
displayed. It may even happen that the steering unit does
not communicate with the diagnostic equipment when the fault occurs.

Golf VI: The steering gives no assistance and an ECU fault and a
steering motor fault appear as errors. In other situations the steering continues
to assist but the yellow steering fault light comes on in the
cluster, with a torque sensor fault logged in diagnostics (possibly indicating miscalibration).

Passat: Similar to the Golf V: the steering sometimes gives no
assistance and shows a torque sensor fault; at other times it
stops assisting completely with a steering ECU error. There may also be
no communication with the steering unit when the fault shows up.

Polo (Koyo): The assistance fails intermittently; when it fails, the steering
unit does not communicate. In that state, the steering gives
no assistance and a power steering fault appears when diagnosing.

Polo (TRW): The assist pump shows an angle sensor fault. When the fault occurs, the pump stops working and does not communicate with diagnostics.

Occasionally it works
again sporadically, but
fails again afterwards.

Technical diagnosis, repair and validation process

Our electric power steering repair process consists of several technical stages, carried out with professionalism and attention to detail:

1. Initial diagnosis

1. Initial diagnosis

As soon as we receive the faulty steering unit, we carry out a thorough diagnosis. We use scanning tools to read the error codes stored in the unit and verify the reported symptoms. We then connect the steering to our simulator and test bench to reproduce the vehicle's operating conditions. We measure electrical parameters (current draw, sensor signals) and mechanically check the behaviour of the steering. This phase allows us to pinpoint the root cause of the fault, whether it is a defective sensor, an electronic fault in the ECU, mechanical wear in the electric motor or other problems.

2. Repair and replacement of components

2. Repair and replacement of components

Once the fault has been identified, we proceed to repair the unit. We carefully dismantle the power steering using specialist tools (so as not to damage gears or circuits) and replace the faulty components. Depending on the case, we may replace the electric assist motor, the torque sensor or the angle sensor, repair the electronic board (ECU) by fixing dry solder joints or damaged electronic components, and even update the software or the internal calibration if a programming error caused the failure. All the spare parts fitted are new, high-quality parts (OEM-equivalent), ensuring the repair lasts. After reassembling the unit, we carry out the necessary adjustments and calibrations (for example, we calibrate the newly fitted sensors) so that the steering is within the manufacturer's original specifications.

3. Final tests and validation

3. Final tests and validation

Once the repair is complete, every power steering unit goes through our test bench again for a rigorous final validation. We check that the fault has been resolved: the steering must assist with the correct force in both directions, the new components must respond properly (no warning lights on the cluster) and no error codes must appear when simulating its operation in the vehicle. We test different load and steering scenarios to ensure that the steering responds normally under both low and high demand. Only when the unit works perfectly on the bench do we consider the repair finished.

(After these technical stages, we carefully pack the steering unit and send it back to the customer. The repaired unit is ready to fit in the vehicle without the need for additional coding in most cases, as it is the car's own original unit.)

Advantages of repairing the power steering instead of replacing it

Advantages of repairing the power steering instead of replacing it

  • Cost savings: Repairing the faulty unit is usually much cheaper than buying a new steering unit from the dealership. It lets you save money by making use of most of your original components, replacing only what is needed for it to work properly.

  • Speed and convenience: Our repair service has fast turnaround times, generally returning the repaired steering unit within a few days. You avoid the long waits that ordering a new part sometimes involves (especially on models where the electric power steering is expensive or hard to get hold of). In addition, with our home collection and delivery logistics throughout Murcia, the process is very convenient.

  • Keeping the original configuration: By repairing your own steering unit, you keep the same unit already matched to your vehicle. This means that in most cases you will not need to code or programme anything when refitting it, since the steering ECU is still the original one from your car and recognises all the parameters (calibration, angles, limits) just as before the fault. By contrast, a new or exchange unit might require programming or adaptation specific to the vehicle.

  • Quality and warranty: A power steering unit repaired by professionals, with quality parts and thorough testing, offers a level of reliability equivalent to that of a new part. At Ecumotorstock we supply every unit with its warranty, backing the work carried out. You can rest assured that the repaired steering unit has been 100% verified under real operating conditions, so you can trust its performance.

  • Environmental sustainability: Repairing instead of replacing helps protect the environment by reducing electronic waste and wasted parts. You are recycling and extending the service life of a complex component, avoiding the premature disposal of materials and the manufacture of a new part. It is an environmentally responsible decision without sacrificing quality or safety.
