Coded Keys: History, Functionality, and Security

Contrary to popular belief, the origin of coded keys dates back about four decades. Initially, it wasn't a key as we know it today, but rather a car unlocking system that involved a keypad mounted on the door.

Recognizing that this was not a fully secure or reliable system, new projects were developed until the coded keys we use today were perfected. Years ago, a coded key might have been considered a luxury or a high-tech novelty; however, today it is an essential and basic component of any vehicle purchase. The utility of coded keys goes far beyond simply opening the car door, as we will explore below.

What are Coded Keys?

Coded keys allow the driver to unlock the car without inserting a physical key into the lock cylinder. This is made possible by an integrated chip or transponder, which is synchronized with the car's ECU (Engine Control Unit). Once recognized, the car can be opened with the simple press of a button, not to mention the various other commands that can be sent to the vehicle through this transponder.

For security reasons, the configuration or coding of each transponder is unique to a single vehicle. Additionally, coded keys are associated with a PIN, which is extremely useful for creating duplicate keys and avoiding the high costs of purchasing new, uncoded blanks.

When buying a car—whether brand new from a dealership or second-hand—the ideal scenario is to receive a pair of coded keys or fobs along with their respective PIN. This facilitates the coding of future keys and ensures you have a backup in case of an emergency with your primary key.

Advanced Functions and Security

Thanks to the integrated transponder, coded keys do more than just unlock doors; they can operate power locks and cross-reference security data with the car's computer every time the ignition is turned. In many cases, they also allow for the remote operation of windows. Interestingly, each function performed by the key is independent of the others, even though they reside in the same device.

Coded keys can perform different roles depending on the type of transponder they house. Whether using a fixed, encrypted (crypto), or rolling (evolving) code, these keys provide high levels of security. This minimizes the possibility of code cloning and allows for the immobilization of the vehicle through sophisticated code-masking programs.

These keys are an essential part of the vehicle's security and ignition system. They are required to start the engine, enable the fuel injection system, and unlock the steering wheel, among other vital functions.
