What is the function of the particulate filter?
It is the part responsible for reducing the emission of particles harmful to health into the atmosphere through the exhaust pipe.
Since it is located before the tailpipe, it traps the solid particles that travel along with the exhaust gases and then, roughly every 500 km driven, it starts the regeneration process.
This process is responsible for completely eliminating the particles trapped inside its walls by burning them off.
Clogging, the cause of 99% of faults
The regeneration process usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes.
During that time we cannot switch the car off.
In addition, you need to drive at more than 60 km per hour for at least 10 minutes, so if you don't usually make frequent motorway trips, that regeneration will not take place and you will accumulate soot.
And when clogging levels are above 70%, driving long distances on the road will be of no use.
Because once that point is reached, the regeneration system will stop working; and you will need to buy a new one.

Can excess soot cause me problems?
Yes. We must bear in mind that a clogged DPF is equivalent to a blocked exhaust pipe, and when an engine cannot expel the gases resulting from combustion properly, it chokes and loses power.
In addition, this blockage makes most of the exhaust gases return to the engine - and with them the soot - causing long-term faults in delicate components such as: injectors, turbo, EGR valves, intake manifolds.
