Cambios en la ITV y su impacto en las repros, ¿Estan en peligro las reprogramaciones?

Changes to vehicle inspections and their impact on remapping: Are reprogrammings at risk?

New Vehicle Inspection Rules

Since May of this year, new regulations governing vehicle inspection tests have come into effect. These new regulations, much stricter than their predecessor, include, among other measures, a review of the car's ECU software to detect faults and irregularities in its operation. As a result, many owners of remapped vehicles are now wondering: Will my remapping be detectable? Do I need to return my car to its original state before the inspection?

How can a remap be detected?

Remapping can be detected in two main ways: by reading the write counter or by verifying the checksum. Let's start with the first and most likely method: reading the write counter. Every time a technician makes an adjustment to the ECU software, i.e., a remap, this counter increases. Therefore, if connecting the control unit to the diagnostic machine shows that the checksum counter is not zero, we could have problems. However, this obstacle is very easy to overcome, as it's enough to reset the counter to zero each time a change is made to the unit's software to make our programming undetectable.

What is the control unit's checksum?

Well, the word checksum is an anglicism that in Spanish means verification sum. It's used in computing to verify the integrity of information. This is simply the numerical representation of a kind of digital fingerprint that each file has. So, if there's any change to the file, that 'fingerprint' also changes, and with it the number that represents it (its checksum). By comparing the original checksum with the current one on the unit, any programming can be detected.

Although we at ecumotorstock.com consider such checks unlikely, as the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) would need to obtain a massive database containing all currently circulating checksums. This seems almost impossible.

So, will my remap be detectable?

If you go to a workshop that takes care to erase its 'traces' (the counter), then no. As we've mentioned, it's highly improbable that the DGT will manage to obtain a database containing all the checksums used in Spain; not to mention that such verification would increase the average testing time by approximately 30 minutes.

Making your remap a legal modification

If your car comes from the factory without a tow bar, and you later install one, you must go to an ITV (Spanish vehicle inspection station) to have the modification evaluated. If it is valid, it will be recorded on the vehicle's registration document, and you can drive with it without problems. The same applies to remapping. Furthermore, once approved, this change must be reported to your insurance company.

What else might they detect?

Initially, they will check for any anomalies or signs of tampering in the various emissions control systems, such as the removal of the particulate filter. They will also check for discrepancies in mileage between the odometer reading and the ECU reading, as well as any faults or deactivations of the car's safety systems, such as turning off the warning light indicating that the airbag needs repair or the ABS warning light.

So, can I breathe easy?

Yes. It's generally believed they will only look for faults or tampering with the emissions control and safety systems. However, if you still have doubts, you should go to a specialized workshop and verify that your reprogramming counter is reset to zero. Although, as we said, they will most likely focus on checking the emissions control and safety systems. In the event that your ECU's programming... Whatever you've done with us, you can breathe even easier. Because we always take the precaution of resetting that counter to zero in all our work.
