¿Por qué se encienden varios testigos a la vez en el coche?

Why do several warning lights come on at once in your car?

When several warning lights come on at the same time (engine, ABS, ESP, airbag, battery, steering, etc.) it is usually alarming… and with good reason. In most cases it does not mean everything is broken, but that there is a common communication or electrical supply problem affecting several systems at once.

In this article we explain the real causes, how to identify whether the problem lies in the electrics, the ECU or the cluster, and why a full diagnosis is key to avoiding unnecessary parts replacement.

Communication failure between modules (ECU – BSI – BCM)

Modern cars work as a network of control units that communicate with each other over the CAN bus. If communication fails, several systems “lose contact” at the same time.

Modules commonly involved

  • ECU (engine)

  • BSI / BCM (body and comfort)

  • ABS / ESP

  • Power steering

  • Instrument cluster

Typical symptoms

  • Many warning lights come on at once

  • Generic error messages

  • Faults that appear and disappear

  • The car may keep running… or go into emergency mode

👉 A single communication fault can trigger 5–6 different warnings.

Voltage and battery problems that affect the electronics

The number one cause of multiple warning lights is electricity.

Most common electrical faults

  • Weak or flat battery

  • Faulty alternator

  • Voltage drops when starting

  • Poor earth connections

  • Incorrect jump-starts

What happens electronically

  • Modules reset

  • False errors are generated

  • Some modules do not start up properly

  • Communication is temporarily lost

⚠️ Many cars arrive at the workshop with “half the electronics broken” and the origin is an old battery.

When is it the cluster and when is it the ECU?

The problem is not always where you see it.

It may be the instrument cluster when:

  • All the warning lights come on at once

  • The car runs normally

  • The fault is visual or erratic

  • The diagnosis shows incoherent errors

It may be the ECU or a module when:

  • There are real operating faults

  • Persistent communication errors appear

  • Some systems stop working

  • The errors cannot be cleared

👉 The cluster shows the problem, but does not always cause it.

Why a full diagnosis matters (not just basic OBD)

This is where most mistakes are made.

❌ Incomplete diagnosis

  • Generic OBD reader

  • Clearing errors without analysis

  • Replacing parts “by elimination”

Result: expense, frustration and the fault comes back.

✅ Full professional diagnosis

It includes:

  • Reading all the modules

  • Analysis of CAN communication

  • Checking voltage and earth connections

  • Technical interpretation of errors

  • Detection of the real origin of the fault

🔧 Only then can you tell whether the problem is:

  • electrical

  • in the cluster

  • in the ECU

  • in the communication between modules

What to do if several warning lights come on at once

Recommended steps

  1. Do not panic or replace parts

  2. Check the battery and charging system

  3. Observe whether the car runs normally or not

  4. Do not clear errors without a diagnosis

  5. Carry out a full diagnosis

👉 In many cases, the solution is simpler (and cheaper) than it seems.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bad battery turn on many warning lights?

Yes. It is the most common cause.

Can I keep driving?

It depends. If the car runs normally, with caution. If there is a loss of power or safety faults, it is better to stop.

Does clearing errors fix anything?

No. It only hides the problem if the cause is still present.
